Saint Dawg “My Dog”

I once had a dog I called Dawg for lack of deep thought,

Dawg was a loving dog but I’m happy to say not bought,

His legs were longer than mine and made him appear lanky,

Unless he got his special brand others made him stanky,

People say “go away” without knowing the reason why,

Instead I say “stay” and he understands his guardian guy,

I didn’t refer to me as master as it’s such an awful word,

Dawg loves me truth be known but together we are absurd,

Some call Dawg “crazy dog” because he loves this man so,

I’m given to giving Dawg treats too often in our little show,

It’s not really a show but what we do to entertain the kids,

It’s silly that sidewalk shows are illegal and the law forbids,

Once they placed my wrists in cuffs and it upset my big dog,

No conversation or anything besides my wrists tied like logs,

It was strange yes strange indeed to be arrested for a gag,

A little puppet dancing about upset a lady cop to be a hag,

I swear when we got home old Dawg spoke from his mind,

The words he used and said to me truly were not very kind,

I’m sure my imagination made his words to be understood,

Dawg would carry a 4” x 4” just like a bone but out of wood,

Now old Dawg weighed a lot, a lot more than a dog should,

He is 3’ tall and 185 pounds of muscle feeling like solid wood,

Carrying a chewed 4 x 4 x 4’ through a gate is quite a task,

He’s half Great Dane and Bull Mastiff for those that must ask,

Side by side we walk, hand n’ paw or chewed hand we play,

He plays hard with me like a big ol’ plush toy most every day,

I’m the same back to him but he has eased up on little ones,

Time flies, day by day, and year by year, Dawg says time runs,

Ten years of loving him have flown by in time and I need more,

He feels the same as he’d rather rest than go out to the store,

Dawg spends more time on the sofa with me and has his spot,

Puts his feet under the blanket with me to keep his feet hot,

I’m sure he must be half human as I never saw the mastiff,

There’s a ton of people running round here all cold n’ stiff,

And my sweet dog is cuddled to me with a smile on his face,

He and I have great memories of just us being in the chase.
