Don\u2019t look back, my daddy said when I was hurt,<\/span><\/p>\n

You have to read when a girl is real or a big flirt,<\/span><\/p>\n

So many things he said to me that now seem wise,<\/span><\/p>\n

He was always right back then to my teen surprise,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I wonder do my children see the same things in me,<\/span><\/p>\n

He was so wise in his advice and what he could see,<\/span><\/p>\n

No man was a greater hero to me than my wise dad,<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s sad that it took decades for me to see what I had,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Friends and peers came to me for answers if in need,<\/span><\/p>\n

My wisdom came from my dad as I tried not to mislead,<\/span><\/p>\n

As a teenager time rapidly passed until draft day came,<\/span><\/p>\n

Tears ran down dad\u2019s face when he saw the letter of claim,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I have had one goal for my life if truth is to be fully told,<\/span><\/p>\n

Many dreams I\u2019ve had of whom I\u2019d marry and forever hold,<\/span><\/p>\n

I announced to all of my future to be and what love is about,<\/span><\/p>\n

That night on first sight I said I\u2019d marry you without a doubt,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While overseas my letters of love never arrived to you,<\/span><\/p>\n

My heart was broken from losing you, dear comrades too,<\/span><\/p>\n

Overwhelmed even he, the wise man of a previous war,<\/span><\/p>\n

Had little advice other than the tears will fade as before,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A man needs to cry so tears can cleanse his broken heart,<\/span><\/p>\n

I was so fragile inside although I appeared whole in part,<\/span><\/p>\n

A year had turned me gray from combat and my loneliness,<\/span><\/p>\n

So many things I could do without but one I truly did miss,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Did I have my chance and the war took it away from me?<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a bigger man now but this emptiness, only I can see,<\/span><\/p>\n

The hardness imprinted upon my face might remain I fear,<\/span><\/p>\n

Death of warriors fogs my vision so, I no longer see clear,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Visions of you remain clear in memories that I hold dear,<\/span><\/p>\n

My only cherished photograph is of you, it I can see clear,<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve traced your face so many times a halo has taken form,<\/span><\/p>\n

Kissed your photographed lips so often it has become norm,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Oh daddy, my heart cries loud with every beat in my chest,<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll try to see her one last time and tell her she was the best,<\/span><\/p>\n

I can think of nothing but her as my heart searches for a way,<\/span><\/p>\n

To see her again, to kiss her lips, and say what I must say,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My soul is on fire from dreams and memories of holding you,<\/span><\/p>\n

To see your car come down the hill towards my house too,<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes me dream of you the whole night through?<\/span><\/p>\n

Now the day has come for me to move the family away too,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Broken heart, flowing tears, and memories of war do fade,<\/span><\/p>\n

Love remains in full deep within a soul even if not displayed,<\/span><\/p>\n

As if the sun burst forth to awaken the love deep within me,<\/span><\/p>\n

As you approach in your little car a beautiful future I can see.<\/span><\/p>\n
